Description / Biography

Dr. Jos Welie is a professor of Health Care Ethics in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Creighton University.  The classes he teaches include Law and Bioethics, Philosophical Bioethics, End-of-Life Care ethics, Catholic Bioethics, Capstone and a travel course – In the Footsteps of Van Gogh.

Dr. Welie is passionate about understanding the world around him and attributes his meticulous thinking and effective writing to the educators who guided him to dig down to the most fundamental questions. He hopes to impart these same skills on the students he teaches at Creighton.

Dr. Welie is a native of The Netherlands where he attained graduate degrees in medicine, law, and philosophy. A Fulbright grant brought him to Loyola University of Chicago's Department of Medical Humanities and he subsequently obtained his doctorate in medical ethics from the School of Medical Sciences of the Radboud University of Nijmegen (The Netherlands).

His ongoing research interests include end-of-life care, ethical issues in chronic and terminal care, the philosophical foundations of health care ethics, Catholic bioethics, personhood and personalized medicine, dental ethics and the relationships between law and ethics.

In addition to academia, Dr. Welie enjoys travel, particularly in Europe, classical music, architecture and renovation.
