Max Engel, PhD
Dr. Max Engel is a professor of education and theology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University. The classes he teaches include the Teacher Residency Integrated Seminar, Foundations of Education Seminar I and Foundations of Education Seminar II. He is passionate about education and takes great interest in how education and theology intersect.
He believes “teaching in both the Education and the Theology Departments allows me to explore ways we develop and grow into our fullest potential as human beings. In many ways, Theology responds to questions of what it means to be human, while Education helps individuals achieve their fullest potential”.
After teaching in Catholic high schools for eight years, he earned his PhD in Religious Education / Catechetics after submitting his dissertation analyzing the cognitive, affective, and catechetical dimensions of selected contemporary Catholic high school religion textbooks.
His ongoing research interests include Catholic school teacher preparation and formation, the intersection of sports and religious faith today and recruiting and retaining new teachers.
Dr. Engel received his BA from Boston College, his MEd at the University of Notre Dame, and his MA and PHD at The Catholic University of America. In addition to academia, Dr. Engel enjoys biking, hiking, camping, exercising and keeping (somewhat) fit! He also enjoys traveling to National parks with his family, reading and preparing family meals.
