STRESS AND SLEEP MANAGEMENT COURSE

This course studies stress and sleep and their respective impacts on health and chronic disease across the lifespan. In exploring how to manage stress, several management techniques are debated and practiced with emphasis on mind-body medicine and the relaxation response. Students also learn how to evaluate and read research papers that are based on stress and sleep management practices and procedures.

EXERCISE FOR CHRONIC DISEASE COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • Examine the effects of emotional stress and inadequate sleep on the incidence of chronic disease.
  • Compare and contrast stress and fatigue management strategies.
  • Develop a personal self-care program on stress and sleep management.

COURSE CREDIT AND CE

This CE course is approved by NBHWC for 45 continuing education units.

This is one of the courses within the Graduate Certificate in Lifestyle Medicine and the Master of Science in Integrative Health and Wellness. Individuals who complete this course and then enroll in the certificate or degree program may also be eligible for up to three hours of awarded credit toward their degree or certificate. In order to apply credits for this course to a degree or certificate program, you will be required to pay the difference in cost between the CE course and tuition.

MEET YOUR COURSE INSTRUCTOR

This online course is led by Dr. Amy Cosimano, EdD, RN, NBC-HWC, assistant professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Creighton University. She is a registered nurse and teaches in the Healthy Lifestyle Management undergraduate and Integrative Health and Wellness graduate programs. She has taught at Creighton University for more than 18 years.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Participants will be required to purchase two books:

  • “Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams” by Matthew Walker, 2017. ISBN-13: 978-1-5011-4432-5.
  • “The Upside of Stress: Why Stress is Good for You, and How You Get Good at It” by Kelly McGonigal, 2015. ISBN-13: 978-1101982938.

REFUND POLICY

Continuing education and professional development courses may be cancelled by the attendee in writing up to 7 days before the course begins for a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. No refund will be given 7 days prior to the course. Some courses are not eligible for a refund; these exceptions are noted in specific course descriptions. In the event of a weather related closure, the course will be rescheduled.
