Mental Health First Aid Training Online

Learn how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This online training will help you identify, understand and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses. 

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid USA is a training–like regular First Aid or CPR–designed to give people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to the warning signs of specific illnesses.

The Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis. The ALGEE action plan includes:

• Assess for risk of suicide or harm
• Listen nonjudgmentally
• Give reassurance and information
• Encourage appropriate professional help
• Encourage self-help and other support strategies

This course is perfect for anyone who wants to understand how to best assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Creighton faculty and staff are welcome to attend. 

This free online training is offered in partnership with Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare. Through a variety of state and federal funding sources, Region 6 Prevention Services provides coordination, planning, and implementation of substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion and suicide prevention activities.

Meet the Course Instructor

Katlynn Osborn, MSW, LICSW, PLADC, is a dual diagnosis therapist who provides clinical services in relation to mental health and substance use. She is also a clinically certified trauma practitioner. She obtained her bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and obtained her master's degree in social work from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

At this time, she is the director of behavioral health services for Capstone Behavioral Health in Fremont, NE. As a certified instructor in Mental Health First Aid, in the last six years, she has trained and certified hundreds of individuals from various backgrounds and populations in this curriculum. She is a mother of two young boys, and she enjoys spending time with her husband and family being outdoors and watching or playing sports.
