Become a Health Advocate for Your Community

This program provides training to lay volunteers in Omaha who want to become health advocates within their communities. You’ll learn about prevention, identification and treatment of chronic disease and gain the tools you need to navigate the health care system. As a community health advocate, you’ll help improve the health of your community.

Upon completion, participants will be awarded a certificate that documents training. This program is administered by Creighton University Center for Promoting Health and Health Equity (CPHHE) in partnership with Health Sciences Multicultural and Community Affairs (HS-MACA).

Candidates for the Community Health Advocate Program must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be able to read, write and understand English at a 6th grade level or above
  • Be willing to undergo the training by Creighton University, the Health Sciences Multicultural and Community Affairs Department, the Center for Promoting Health and Health Equity and its annual continuing education program
  • Be reliable and dependable

Participants will be prepared to be community health advocates within their communities and expand their understanding of:

  • Community health advocate values and qualities
  • Health disparities
  • Chronic diseases
  • Health literacy
  • Privacy and confidentiality
  • Basic anatomy
  • Vital signs
  • Navigating the health care system
  • Public safety strategies
  • Cultural humility

Refund Policy

Continuing education and professional development courses may be cancelled by the attendee in writing up to 7 days before the course begins for a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. No refund will be given 7 days prior to the course. Some courses are not eligible for a refund; these exceptions are noted in specific course descriptions. In the event of a weather related closure, the course will be rescheduled.
 
Student interactions and viewpoints are a vital part of our rich learning environment. For this reason, Creighton reserves the right to cancel courses in the case of low registration numbers. In this case, registrants will receive a full refund. If a course is cancelled by the University for other non-weather related issues, the student will be notified and a full refund will be processed.
