James Martin Jr., PhD
James R. Martin is an associate professor and assistant director of Interdisciplinary Leadership at Creighton University. He teaches Research Design and Professional Inquiry, Research Design and Data Analysis, Proposal Construction, Leadership in a Global Society, Analyzing Complex Problems, Analysis and Application of Scholarly Literature and Dissertation Research for the Interdisciplinary Leadership doctorate degree.
The two primary values that motivate his teaching include: “cura personalis, which encourages me to meet students where they are; and magis, which pushes me to do more to help students learn and to press students to do more than they think they care.”
Dr. Martin has lived and worked in Nebraska for most of his adult life. Before entering academia, he spent 25 years working for a small family business called Dicobe Media Inc. that specialized in the recording, editing, production and packaging of promotional and educational materials for individuals and companies across the United States and Canada. The company won a Heartland Better Business Bureau Ethics award in 2003 and Dr. Martin was later named to the 40 under 40 list of business executives in Omaha.
Just before completing his doctoral degree, Dr. Martin joined the Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Leadership at Creighton University in 2012 He is passionate about politics and is involved in research that studies the effect of identities on political outcomes and the influence of immigration on parties during elections. He is also active in assessment-based, scholarship of teaching and learning research.
Dr. Martin received his BA in Political Science and History from Bellevue University, an MA in International Relations from Creighton University, an MS in Political Science from Florida State University, and a PhD in Political Science from Florida State University. When he is away from academia, he enjoys spending time with his son and daughter, volunteering in the community, creating and showing art, running, and east coast swing dancing.
